About Sarah

Living and working by the sea in beautiful Noosa, Australia Sarah Thomas is a contemporary artist well-known for her fun and flamboyant figurative paintings. The human form at leisure is her inspiration - dancers, swimmers, surfers, musicians, people enjoying life are her subjects. Feel-good paintings and pleasing to the eye, her figures are graceful and poised often looking out and connecting with the viewer while sometimes facing away  to gaze at a view adding to the overall feeling of whimsy. "Happy, warm, decorative, naive style, a little bit retro" are words often used to describe her work. Sarah uses the highest quality materials. Atelier and Matisse acrylic paints, fine woven primed canvas, kiln-dried radiate pine timber frames and charcoal are her choice of medium although she also likes to dabble in mixed media such as papers, beach sand and fishing line and play with textures.

Growing up as a city girl in Melbourne Sarah pursued her interests in the arts, dance and sports, attended university and began her working life as a teacher of primary school children. She often escaped to the Bellarine Peninsula and dreamed of living by the sea. A love of travel then saw her spend a few years overseas backpacking and teaching in London and Singapore before settling with her husband in the warm climate, beachside town of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast where she enjoyed her work of teaching English to newly arrived adult immigrants. Determined to remain home after the birth of their first child, Sarah took up painting which had always been a hobby, managed to sell a few artworks locally and the garage became a studio. One day she took 10 paintings under her arm and approached Vicki Lau at esteemed “Discovery” in Hastings St Noosa to see if she would consider adding her to her stable of popular artists. “Discovery” put her on the map and from there she added other Queensland and interstate galleries to the list of those exhibiting and selling her now popular art. That was in 1999 and she hasn’t looked back…

A light-filled art studio was added to her home and the creation of her own website in 2003 meant even more exposure culminating in solo and group exhibitions interstate and internationally.

Sarah was honoured to be invited to exhibit and attend the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea at the historic Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Italy in December 2005. As an artist it was an unforgettable experience to live in and walk the streets of Florence where Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci had once walked during Renaissance times! Sarah also rates her Ebb restaurant, St Thomas More School projects, “Paint a Song of Summer” Noosa solo exhibition, “Contemporanea” Florence Biennale Australia exhibition and managing her own little Sunshine Beach gallery for a couple of years as amongst her highlights.

Sarah now concentrates on private commissions and working with like-minded galleries to represent her work. Her paintings, which currently number well over 800, have found their way all over the globe to homes, beach-houses, restaurants, offices and hotels and Sarah prides herself on providing a friendly, interactive and professional service creating special paintings for her customers. Currently her paintings can be viewed in her own studio by appointment and also at Raw Art Gallery Hastings St Noosa, Manyung Gallery Sorrento VIC and Seaview Gallery Queenscliff VIC near her old haunts on the Bellarine Peninsula.  She particularly enjoys regularly participating in charity fundraiser exhibitions such as PLAN International, The Abused Child Trust for Kids and school art projects and is particularly sought after for her personalised “family portraits”. She is now producing some small limited edition digital reproduction prints of her work.

Sarah lives in beautiful Sunshine Beach, Noosa, Queensland with her husband, two teenage children and two dogs. She is surrounded by nature and a vibrant little community that constantly inspires her. She likes to spend time with family and friends, exercise regularly to keep fit, sail, swim, play tennis, follow the AFL footy and cricket, go to the theatre and ballet, have outings with her camera and loves planning the next trip. It’s a short walk to the national park or the beach via the little village complete with plenty of cafes and she can hear and see the ocean from home.

Sarah's Mission

“Life is a gift and what joy and beauty there is in life. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of this. Every time I stand before a canvas I have a simple quest – to create a thing of beauty, something fun, warm and happy to make the viewer smile. That is what art should be about… spread the joy!”
